UK Considers Regulation of the Press Industry

As a result of the report submitted by Justice Brian Henry Leveson related to ethics in the press and public relations industry, the legislature in the United Kingdom is considering options for regulation of the press industry.  While the PR industry and many in the House of Commons are largely in favor of the recommendation to implement a self-regulating body rooted in statute, Prime Minister David Cameron and other government officials have misgivings about legislation aimed at regulating the press.  The option of instituting a Royal Charter for the Press Industry has also been proposed; this option would provide additional oversight to adherence to professional standards without the need for legislation or statute.
