Texas Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Reduce State Regulation

Texas State Representative Bill Callegari has proposed two bills aimed at easing restrictions on occupational licensing throughout the state.  Texas requires approximately one-third of its workforce to be licensed – higher than the national average – and Callegari believes his committee’s research has deemed many of the existing licensing requirements unnecessary.  One of the proposed bills would provide a mechanism for phasing out these unnecessary licenses and the other would make it easier to challenge the current occupational licensing requirements.  Supporters of regulation in the state contest that it is not the number or scale of licensing programs that is the problem, but the lack of meaningful licensing guidelines and requirements.
