Traditionally, professional education and certification programs have emphasized the development and assessment of knowledge and skills, which rely largely on cognitive abilities to learn, apply information, and solve problems. In recent years, increasing attention has been given to the importance of noncognitive competencies, or soft skills, needed to succeed in the workplace for all occupations. Educators and employers have recognized gaps in workforce readiness among graduating students with respect to soft skills, such as resilience and collaboration (NRC, 2012). Medical and nursing schools are emphasizing soft skill training and assessment in exercises and exams, and soft skill training and assessment are becoming increasingly popular in the commercial marketplace. The webinar will cover some of the fundamentals on soft skills and underlying models of personality assessment, and some of the research that underscores the importance of soft skills in the workplace. This is a background webinar to a companion session, Soft Skills: A New Frontier for Professional Credentialing?, to be presented at the CLEAR conference in Portland, which will go into more detail about soft skill assessment, drawing on case studies and global testing research.
