This session will explore what is meant by “diversity” within a profession. The presenter will facilitate a discussion among the participants on what constitutes diversity in a profession and whether or not a regulatory body has a role to play in promoting diversity. Does diversity include gender, racialized persons, Aboriginal peoples, gays, lesbians, bisexual persons, transgendered persons, persons with disabilities? Is diversity being promoted only at an entry level or at all levels of experience of a profession? Recent examples of regulatory agencies that have been involved in diversity programs will be discussed and input from regulatory agencies will be sought on projects within their own jurisdictions. This session will specifically look at the Justica program by the Law Society of Upper Canada which was created in order to retain and advance women lawyers in private practice. The details of the Justica program will be used as a springboard to discuss, more broadly, the role of regulatory bodies in relation to diversity. Given the fact that this is an emerging issue on the regulatory landscape, a lively debate is expected over the role of the regulator, the role of the association and whether diversity matters to registrants, clients, society at large…or at all.

The Regulatory Administration information-sharing webinars offer the opportunity to gain knowledge about a particular topic and then engage in open dialogue, discussion and networking with the presenters and fellow attendees.  The phone lines will be open to allow for discussion of questions and comments from attendees.

Offerings are presented through a web-based PowerPoint and audio teleconference, allowing attendees to participate and ask questions from their own office or conference room.  Using a speakerphone and PowerPoint at your location, you can have multiple attendees for one registration. Attendees receive a copy of the PowerPoint presentation after the webinar.
