President's Message

By Caroline MacIsaac-Power
September 2010

In a few days time, CLEAR’s 30th educational conference will be underway in Nashville, where over 560 attendees will participate in the sessions and associated training programs. Nearly thirty exhibitors will highlight innovations, products and resources to assist us as we together promote regulatory excellence. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Program Committee co-chairs Kathleen (Kate) Nosbisch and Deborah Worrad, as well as the many other committee members, who have worked so hard to develop such an outstanding conference program.

Accompanying this message is a list of activities undertaken by the organization over the past year. Many of you will have attended events, responded to surveys, developed resources or participated in a committee and I thank you for making the last twelve months so memorable and successful for the organization. Today I draw your attention to several of these initiatives that I consider particularly significant:

  • CLEAR’s Strategic Organizational Review identified opportunities to strengthen the organization’s structure, increase productivity and mentor new volunteer committee members. Many of you responded to survey requests and the committee overseeing the review was guided by your clear messages. Bylaws changes have now been approved and will be effective on September 25, 2010. The result will be a new committee structure, improved communications between the Board of Directors and its committees, as well as a mentoring program for new committee members. My thanks go to committee members Bruce Matthews, James Collins, Darrel Crimmins, Mary Lou Gignac, Sandy Greenberg, Faye Lemon, Nancy Swetnam, Linda Waters and Ken Zgraggen for their dedication and vision.

  • Delivery of a focused symposium, complemented by Board Member Training and Executive Leadership Programs. In June, CLEAR offered Looking Ahead: Consumer Protection through Professional Regulation, a one-day symposium in Toronto, Ontario focused on enhancing consumer protection through professional regulation. In the days prior to, and following, the symposium the two training programs were offered, providing four days of high-quality education offerings in one location. As the organization continues to grow, it will explore more of these regional events and is already planning two sets of events in Toronto in the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011. I would like to recognize the work of James Collins, Bruce Matthews, Deanna Williams and Deborah Worrad in planning these events.
  • Increased frequency of webinar and other remote offerings. Given the limited opportunities for travel in many jurisdictions, CLEAR understands the need to deliver more of its important resources remotely. Consequently it offered nine webinars, five Board Member Training modules and four information-sharing conference calls for regulatory administrators remotely over the last twelve months and plans further initiatives for 2011.

Each activity, resource and initiative provided by CLEAR is only possible because of the service of volunteer committee and Board members. On behalf of the organization, I thank them for their commitment to CLEAR and the wider regulatory community it serves. While we have accomplished a great deal, there is still much to do. The year ahead will be another exciting one for the organization. Please join me in signing up for committee service in 2010-2011. Important initiatives are planned for the benefit of your organization and the public we strive to protect and I look forward to working alongside you to realize the organization’s goals.

In closing, I recognize the extraordinary service to CLEAR demonstrated by Past-President Rosemary McCool and Board Member James Collins who will be leaving the Board of Directors at the close of the Nashville conference. I thank them for their commitment and dedication, both to CLEAR and the broader regulatory community. As Rose and James depart the Board, I am delighted to welcome Faye Lemon to her role as CLEAR's next President. Faye will lead the organization with imagination and vigor and I look forward to supporting her in my new role as Past-President.

Thank you for your support over the last twelve months. It has been my privilege to serve as your 2009-2010 President!
