President's Column

Last month, CLEAR co-sponsored the annual conference of the Center for Quality Assurance in International Education held in Washington, D.C. A unique opportunity for accreditors, educators and regulators to come together, the conference focused on globalization of the professions and higher education, particularly in light of the Marrakesh Trade Agreement, the Lisbon Higher Education Convention, and the Buenos Aires Telecommunications Declaration. Representatives from countries from around the world attended the meeting where CLEAR was officially represented by Margaret Risk, chair of CLEAR's ad hoc International Relations Committee.

By the time you read this, CLEAR's second Canadian regional conference will be over and our attention focused on the annual conference. Before we move on to Denver in September, however, I want to thank the many Saskatchewan colleges and other agencies that worked together to make the regional conference, and its accompanying NCIT training programs a big hit.

Charting A Course for 21st Century Regulation is this year's annual conference theme and the sessions are designed to help regulators prepare for a transition to the new century. There are a couple of format changes I'd like you to notice as you go through the conference flyer. CLEAR's traditionally lengthy Friday noon ceremonies will be (by popular demand) replaced this year by a Walk-Around luncheon, affording us another opportunity for networking. The CLEAR awards presentation will take place during the opening reception on Wednesday evening. For those of you who will attend your first conference this year, I'd like to encourage you to drop by the Orientation to CLEAR scheduled for Wednesday morning before the conference begins. The Orientation is equally useful for those of you who have attended before, yet want to learn more about committee service or CLEAR's place in the world. If you haven't received a copy of our distinctive flyer detailing these exciting activities, contact the CLEAR office or visit our website at www.clearhq.orgwhere you can also register online.

If you have any questions or comments regarding CLEAR, please contact me. As the song says, I'll see you in September!
