A change in regulatory laws for physical therapy practices will allow for advanced practice registered nurses to make referrals. This revision of physical therapy regulations (Laws of Minnesota 1998, chapter 317, section 10) allows a therapist to accept a patient who has received an order or has been referred by the nurse with the agreement of a dentist, chiropractor, podiatrist or physician.
The state of Minnesota recognizes the following as advanced practice registered nurses: nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthesiologists or clinical nurses who specialize in mental health nursing. (source: Minnesota Board of Nursing's For Your Information, Spring 1998, pp. 6)
