Finding the Balance Between Regulatory Reduction and Public Protection

A Regulation Reform Pilot Program was established by the 2018 Virginia Acts of the Assembly for the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services to reduce regulations by 25% in three years, to be followed by all executive branch agencies. Virginia's recently elected Governor, Glenn Youngkin, has indicated deregulatory measures as a priority. In fact, his first Executive Directive seeks to drive job creation and economic growth through regulatory reduction. Executive Directive One directs executive branch agencies "to initiate regulatory processes to reduce by at least 25 percent the number of regulations not mandated by federal or state statute." Two executive directors from DPOR will give an update on regulatory reductions in the past three years and how they plan to meet the current directive.
