Alberta health care aide regulation in effect

Reg of New Professions,

Alberta has introduced new regulation classifying health care aides (HCAs) as regulated health professionals under the province’s Health Professions Act, effective February 2, 2026. Under the changes, only individuals who meet registration requirements and hold a practice permit from the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta may use the title “health care aide,” with permits needing annual renewal. The reform aims to standardize training, set professional practice and conduct standards, require continuing competence, and enhance accountability and public confidence in those providing essential care services. Existing aides enrolled in the prior Alberta Health Care Aide Directory will be transitioned into the new regulatory register.
