UK: Data on NMC's Health Pilot
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has launched a new “Health Pilot” for the Fitness to Practise (FtP) process to better support registrants with complex physical or mental-health needs. Since its January 2025 start, a multidisciplinary team (MDT) of clinical and safeguarding experts has reviewed over 100 cases and — so far — investigations completed via the pilot conclude on average eight months sooner than comparable cases. The pilot works by engaging registrants’ treating clinicians early, tailoring the scope of investigation, and using more considerate communication practices to safeguard wellbeing. This approach aims to make the FtP process more compassionate, accessible, and appropriately responsive to individuals’ health needs. The NMC plans to build on early results by expanding resources, training, and sharing lessons across its FtP teams to continue improving the system.
