UK NMC polits support approach during fitness-to-practice process
The NMC has launched a pilot to provide a more personalised and empathetic first contact with nurses, midwives and nursing associates who are referred to its fitness to practise process. Rather than sending a standard email about the referral, the new approach begins with an email that does not mention the referral, followed by a scheduled phone call where the individual’s support needs and communication preferences are discussed. After that, a tailored written follow-up provides the full details of the concern and signposts wellbeing and representation support. The pilot retains existing formal processes but aims to reduce barriers, improve engagement, and make the experience fairer and more supportive.
