Illinois waives license fee for healthcare volunteers
On August 19, 2025, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed into law a bill that allows healthcare professionals with active, discipline-free licenses to convert their status to volunteer status during the same renewal period, without paying any license fee. The measure eliminates both the volunteer licensure fee and references to volunteer-only licenses in state regulation, enabling licensed professionals—including retired doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, and optometrists—to continue practicing on a voluntary basis. The law takes effect on January 1, 2026.
