California: AI matching tool for state jobs
California has launched a generative AI-powered Skills Matching tool on its CalCareers website to help job seekers identify state government positions that align with their skills and experience. Developed by the California Department of Human Resources and the Office of Data and Innovation, the tool analyzes uploaded resumes and recommends relevant job classifications, helping applicants navigate the state’s complex system of job titles and qualifications. The state reports that during the tool’s initial rollout, approximately 21,500 people clicked to explore it, and nearly 8,000 submitted resumes or other information to receive recommendations. The initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize public-sector recruitment, reduce hiring barriers and improve efficiency. Related measures include streamlining hiring for licensed professionals by recognizing existing credentials, accelerating applicant screening and consolidating vacancies through pooled hiring processes. California officials say the tool does not retain resume or conversation data between sessions, and its performance and user feedback will inform future development.
