Mississippi: PEER committee recommends dissolving barber board

Mississippi's Joint Legislative Committee on Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review has issued a report recommending the dissolution of the Board of Barber Examiners and the Board of Cosmetology and putting them both under the Health Department. The report found, among other things, that Mississippi's barber licensing requirements are more restrictive than 40 other states and that the exams are not effective in evaluating candidates in that only 39% of candidates passed last year. The report also noted a lack of internal accounting controls and knowledge. The Board responded with concerns about lack of funding, lack of proper office space, and lack of support to update current laws.
