UK Nursing and Midwifery Council reduces screening caseload
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) reported that its fitness-to-practise (FtP) screening caseload—the initial assessment stage for referrals—dropped to 1,983 cases at the end of July, marking the lowest level in five years, dating back to July 2020. In that same month, the NMC received 633 new concerns, yet resolved 724 screening cases through prioritization and teamwork, contributing to the reduced backlog.
Lesley Maslen, the NMC’s Executive Director of Professional Regulation, stated that this decline demonstrates the ongoing effectiveness of the NMC’s fitness-to-practise improvement plan. She emphasized the organisation’s commitment to making decisions more timely, compassionate, and supportive, ultimately aiming to build a “fair, effective and trusted regulator."
