New healthcare regulations coming into force in British Columbia on April 1, 2026 will significantly overhaul how health professionals are governed, replacing the long-standing Health Professions Act with the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA). The new framework introduces a centralized oversight body to supervise regulatory colleges, strengthens disciplinary processes, and aims to improve consistency, transparency and public protection across the healthcare system. It also embeds requirements related to anti-discrimination and cultural safety, and supports ongoing consolidation of regulatory colleges to streamline oversight. While the government says the reforms will enhance patient safety and modernize regulation, some critics—including physician groups and opposition politicians—have raised concerns about increased government control, reduced professional autonomy and potential impacts on recruitment and retention of healthcare workers.
