Nigeria considers regulation of nutritionists
Nigeria's House of Representatives has introduced legislation to establish a statutory framework for regulating the nutrition profession, including the creation of a Nutrition Council responsible for setting professional standards, registering qualified practitioners, accrediting education and training programs, and overseeing professional conduct. Supporters of the bill argue that formal professional regulation would strengthen the nutrition workforce, improve the quality and consistency of nutrition services, enhance public confidence, and support efforts to address malnutrition and other public health challenges. The proposed legislation also aims to encourage greater investment in nutrition services by providing a clearer regulatory structure for the profession and aligning workforce development with national health priorities.
