Nigeria strengthens engineering licensure and mobility
The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has adopted a set of regulatory decisions intended to strengthen the oversight of engineering education, training and professional practice in the country and to better align Nigerian engineering standards with international frameworks. At its early-2026 council meeting, COREN approved plans to pursue provisional status under the Sydney and Dublin Accords and full signatory status under the Washington Accord in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), a move designed to enhance global recognition and mobility of Nigerian engineering qualifications. The council also endorsed a draft amendment to its establishing act to broaden regulatory enforcement, improve public safety and accountability, and established specialized units within its accreditation department to support compliance with international standards. Additionally, it approved registrations of thousands of engineers and firms and updated professional practice codes to reflect contemporary best practices, underscoring ongoing efforts to elevate the profession domestically and internationally.
