UK NMC: technological improvements for fitness-to-practice hearings

Compliance & Discipline, Technology,

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has announced a series of changes aimed at speeding up and improving the reliability of its Fitness to Practise (FtP) hearings. The regulator is investing in upgraded technology—including new audio, camera and microphone systems at its London and Edinburgh hearing centres—to reduce delays caused by technical issues and create smoother hybrid hearings. In addition, the NMC has introduced enhanced training, engagement plans and a new induction programme for its Hearings team to foster better collaboration and more effective case management. These measures are intended to help hearings run more efficiently and improve experiences for nurses, midwives and other parties involved, supporting faster resolution of cases. Lesley Maslen, the NMC’s Executive Director of Professional Regulation, said the improvements build on progress made at earlier stages of the FtP process and will contribute to fairer, more timely outcomes.
