Maryland: challenges with modernized licensing system
Maryland’s rollout of a $4 million technology system intended to modernize nursing and other health professional licensing has generated new problems after years of significant backlogs and delays at the Maryland Board of Nursing. The Centralized Health Accreditation and Registration Tool, launched in June, has produced difficulties with account registration, license renewals, payment processing, and communication with applicants, prompting the state to provide individualized assistance while addressing technical issues. The problems are particularly consequential because nurses must maintain active licenses to practice, and past licensing delays have contributed to concerns about workforce shortages; the board previously reported thousands of applicants waiting more than a year for certain health occupation licenses. State officials say complete applications are now processed within three days and that the system is being improved, while healthcare representatives acknowledge the transition challenges but remain encouraged by the effort to create a more efficient process.
