Utah issues guidelines on AI in mental health care

Model Legislation, Standards of Practice, Technology,

Utah has issued its first official guidelines for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into mental health care, aiming to enhance patient safety, ethical standards, and regulatory clarity. Developed by the state's Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (OAIP) in collaboration with the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), the guidance advises therapists to obtain informed consent, uphold strong data privacy practices, and tailor AI use to individual patient needs and digital literacy levels. It also recommends regular monitoring of AI outputs and the establishment of contingency plans for potential technology failures. These guidelines are part of a broader initiative, including House Bill 452, which sets a legal framework for AI applications in mental health services. Utah's approach may serve as a model for other states considering similar regulations.
