Michigan: bills for guardianship and conservator licensure
Michigan lawmakers are advancing guardianship reform legislation aimed at better protecting vulnerable adults from abuse and exploitation. The proposed bills would require professional guardians and conservators to obtain a license through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), ensuring that only qualified individuals can serve in these roles. The reforms also mandate background checks, continuing education, and adherence to ethical standards. Supporters argue that these measures will help prevent financial exploitation and neglect, while critics express concern that the new requirements may limit access to necessary services for some individuals. Fifteen other states currently have some level of licensure, certification, or registration for professional guardians and conservators.
