UK introduces regulatory framework for funeral sector
The UK Government has pledged to introduce a comprehensive statutory regulatory framework for the funeral sector following serious misconduct uncovered at Elkin and Bell funeral directors in Gosport, where 46 bodies were reportedly kept in unrefrigerated conditions. The announcement follows a campaign by Dame Caroline Dinenage, who has called for minimum standards of care, qualifications, accreditation, and licensing for funeral service providers. The proposed reforms are intended to ensure dignity and appropriate care for deceased individuals and to enable authorities to remove rogue operators from the sector. Dame Caroline has also proposed extending the Human Tissue Authority’s remit to regulate funeral directors, private mortuaries, and direct cremation services, along with establishing a statutory register of regulated businesses to help families identify legitimate providers. The move represents a shift from the Government’s earlier position of considering options for regulation toward a commitment to develop a formal regulatory scheme, although specific requirements and an implementation timeline have not yet been announced.
