Illinois: new pathway for internationally-trained physicians

Mobility,

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has introduced a new licensure pathway to help internationally trained physicians (IMGs) practice in Illinois. Under the proposal, IMGs can apply for an International Medical Graduate Limited License, which allows them to work under the supervision of a fully licensed physician for a two-year period at an approved institution. After those two years, they may then apply for an International Medical Graduate Restricted License, which permits more independent practice, particularly in areas with health professional shortages. Eventually, IMGs who satisfy the requirements under the restricted license can apply for full licensure. State officials say the change is intended to help address physician shortages while maintaining safeguards for patient safety, and it was developed with input from medical and regulatory stakeholders.
