Oklahoma considers severe weather tracker licensure
Oklahoma Senate Bill 158, known as the Oklahoma Emergency Weather Response and Tracking Regulatory Act of 2025, proposes the establishment of a licensing system for professional storm chasers in the state. To qualify as a Professional Severe Weather Tracker, individuals must be endorsed by an FCC-regulated major media outlet or an institute of higher education. The licensing process, managed by Service Oklahoma, includes requirements such as displaying license and sponsor numbers on vehicles, passing a criminal background check, providing proof of vehicle insurance, and paying a $500 initial fee with a $250 annual renewal. Licensed storm chasers would be permitted to use emergency flashing lights during significant weather events, as defined by the bill. The legislation does not prohibit amateur storm chasing but restricts certain privileges to licensed professionals. The bill also outlines provisions for license suspension or revocation in case of violations.
